Day 1 of 2013 NFL Free Agency – Gone Fishin’

Mike Wallace, Miami DolphinsToday, March 12, as of 4:00pm EDT the 2013 NFL free agency market is open for business. There are some big names and big needs involved this year, and it’s going to be entertaining see who lands the big fish. We’re going to take a look at the first day of free agency and see how things shake out. This post will be updated all day long as news comes out.  Good fit. Bad fit. Sideways move. Let’s see how it looks…

Updated March 12 @ 11:45pm

Mike Wallace (WR) to the Miami Dolphins

The first big deal and big name of the day was wide receiver, Mike Wallace, going to the Miami Dolphins. Miami picked Wallace up on a 5-year deal $65 million deal.

Tony Gonzalez (TE) forgoes retirement to return to the Atlanta Falcons

It looks like Gonzalez wasn’t quite ready for retirement just yet. The 2012 run was likely too good for him to walk away knowing there might still be some Super Bowl potential left in Atlanta. Gonzalez has informed the team he’ll be coming back, so it looks like a deal will be worked out very soon.

Alex Smith (QB) deal with Kansas City Chiefs is no official

This one was already announced and was just waiting for the league year to begin. Seems the Chiefs wanted to sign a guy they already had.

Gosder Cherilus (OT) agrees to terms with the Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have cap space and are in the market for working on both the offensive line and the defensive side of the ball for their continued migration to a 3-4 scheme. Cherilus is coming from the Detroit Lions where he was selected 17th overall in the 2008 draft. He’s reached a 5-year deal with the Colts.

Louis Vasquez (OG) reaches deal with the Denver Broncos

Many were thought to be in the market for Vasquez, but it looks like the Broncos landed him. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft by the San Diego Chargers, and has been considered one of the top offensive linemen on the market.

Anthony Fasano (TE) signs with the Kansas City Chiefs

Former Dolphins and Cowboys tight end, Fasano, has reached a 4-year deal with the Chiefs. In his six seasons he’s been hot and cold on offenses that have struggled, but he has definitely shown  considerable upside at times. This is another fairly bold move in an effort to rebuild by Kansas City.

Paul Kruger (LB/DE) lands with Cleveland Browns

It was thought the Browns and Colts would be waging war for Kruger, and it seems like Cleveland won the sweepstakes. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports Kruger will be getting a 5-year, $40 million contract.

Andy Levitre (OG) reaches deal with the Tennessee Titans

Levitre was a much coveted O-linemen coming into free agency. It appears the Titans have found the right price for him.

Greg Toler (CB) agrees to terms with the Indianapolis Colts

The Colts were obviously in the market for defensive players to bolster the scheme change,  and with Jerraud Powers leaving they needed a corner. Indy has agreed to terms with former Cardinal, Greg Toler.

Erik Walden (LB) signed by Indianapolis Colts

In further defensive moves, the Colts landed Erik Walden. Walden was a 6th rounder taken by the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and most recently spent time in Green Bay. Surprising move for day one of free agency, but the assumption is that Grigson has a plan. At this point that plan seems to be a big shaky as Walden is getting a 4-year $16 million deal, and evidently is positioned to be the replacement for Dwight Freeney opposite Robert Mathis. This is the biggest head scratcher of the day so far.

Donald Thomas (OG) agrees to deal with the Indianapolis Colts

Thomas only started 7 games for the Patriots last year, and he’s bounced around the league a bit since he was picked up by the Miami Dolphins in 2008. Another surprising first day move for the Colts.

Delanie Walker (TE) signs with Tennessee Titans

Looks to fill Jared Cook’s vacant position, the Titans pick up former Niner Delanie Walker. The 4-year deal could be a good fit for both the Titans and Walker.

Dannell Ellerbe (LB) goes to the Miami Dolphins

The Ravens were supposedly trying to reach a deal with Ellerbe, but it looks like it just couldn’t happen. The Dolphins picked him up in what seems like a great move by Miami and a big loss for Balitmore. Miami is spending big so far. After the big Wallace deal, they are signing Ellerbe to a 5-year $35 million deal. This move has spurred Miami to release LB Karlos Dansby.

Lawrence Sidbury (LB) goes to Indianapolis Colts

In another move that seems like a depth move, the Colts pick up linebacker Lawrence Sidbury. Much like the Walden and Thomas deals, this really seems like a depth move for Indy. Sidbury was drafted in the 4th round of the 2009 draft by the Atlanta Falcons. The colts continue to be active, even if that activity doesn’t involve big names as some were expecting.

Jared Cook (TE) agrees to terms with the St. Louis Rams

Early reports were leaning on Miami also picking up Cook in their big day of activity, but it looks like the Rams are the winners of the tight end out of Tennessee.

Henry Melton (DT) goes to the Chicago Bears

Chicago have re-signed Melton to a 1-year $8.5 million contract. They picked him up in the 4th round of the 2009 draft.

Jermon Bushrod (LT) agrees to sign with the Chicago Bears

The Bears have locked up former New Orleans Saint, Jermon Bushrod. He was a 4th rounder selected by the Saints in 2007.

Ray Maualuga (LB) to sign with Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals pick up Maualuga in an effort to bolster their defense. Maualuga was picked up by the Bengals in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft.

Martellus Bennett (TE) picked up by the Chicago Bears

The Bears have made a big offensive splash in free agency by picking up former Giant, Martellus Bennett. He could be a valued addition in their hot and cold offense.

Chris Canty (DT) has joined the Baltimore Ravens

The ravens have picked up former Giant, Chris Canty. Canty has been in the league 7 years and was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 draft.

Desmond Bryant (DT) signs with the Cleveland Browns

Bryant is signing a 5-year $34 million deal with the Browns. Bryant is a great pickup by Cleveland.

Phillip Wheeler (LB) goes to the Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins remain aggressive on the first day of free agency as they sign Wheeler. The combination of Ellerbe and Wheeler will be a nice addition in Miami after they’ve released linebackers Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett.

Sam Baker (LT) re-signed by Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons opted to keep Baker. They re-signed him for a 6-year deal
