Redemption – Wes Welker Signed By The Denver Broncos

Wes Welker, BroncosIt appears Wes Welker is trying to turn from the dark side of the force going into the 2013 season. On Wednesday, the prototypical “scrappy” receiver inked a 2-year $12 million deal with the Denver Broncos. Up until the last 24 hours it seemed Welkah and the Patriots were going to work out their contract differences, but it appears the hind holes in New England are a bit too tight for ole 83.

The Patriots have been notoriously cold blooded when it comes to retaining talent. It seems the gap in the contract details likely amounted to less than $2 million, which in the grand scheme of things doesn’t really amount to much. I bet Tom Brady is miffed over this move after his own altruistic deal sold as a means to retain some of the talent around him. Guess that “pay cut” doesn’t win Tom Terrific the continued services of Mr. Welker.

Welker now moves from one elite quarterback chucking him the ball to another as he joins forces with Peyton Manning in Denver. The Denver offense has just gotten considerably more scary as a result of this deal. The receiver combination of Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, and Wes Welker tallied a combined 297 receptions, 3,852 yards, and 29 touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, the Patriots signed the even-more-poor-man’s-scrappy-white-receiver, Danny Amendola. Anything can happen when the Pats bring talent to town, but it’s hard to figure that Amendola can produce on the scale of Welker.

Welker has escaped from the evil empire for now. If he can produce in Denver anywhere near as he has in New England, this new deal may be pointing him toward the Hall of Fame. Now I need to go tape together the ripped up Welker images and learn to hate him a little less for awhile…

Update: Pats fans react by burning a Welker jersey…
