Divisional Round Picks (Against the spread)

New Orleans Saints (+8) at Seattle Seahawks

Saints-LogoMy Pick:  New Orleans Saints (+8)

Seattle should win this game, but it’s going to be a relatively close one. The Seahawks have a potent defense that typically causes problems for opposing offenses and affords their own offense some wiggle room. That said, Drew Brees is hardly going to lay down and die. New Orleans doesn’t travel well and we all know what happened a few years ago when the Saints visited Seattle in the playoffs. The Seahawks defense largely kept New Orleans receivers in check in their Week 13 meeting this season, but I don’t expect this meeting to be a walk in the park. Seattle should win, but I don’t pick them to cover.

Indianapolis Colts (+7) at New England Patriots

Colts-LogoMy Pick:  Indianapolis Colts (+7)

The Colts getting 7 on this one makes it an easy decision. I think it’s going to be a close one, and I think Indianapolis can pull out a win in Foxborough against a New England team that has defied logic for most of the season. The Patriots have been middle of the road in all defensive categories in 2013, and they’ve had an offense that has still managed to find ways to win despite injury and adversity. Brady/Belichick black magic has somehow carried them along this far. That voodoo can only go so far, and I think the Colts can win this one spread or no.

San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers (+1)

Carolina-Panthers-LogoMy Pick:  Carolina Panthers (+1)

This game will be a big test for Cam Newton and the Panthers. They’ve been hot in the tail end of the 2013 season, and they really need to ride that momentum into this game. While the Niners looked good in the Wild Card Round, I’m not so quick to jump on that bandwagon. These are two teams with very good defenses and offenses piloted by young QBs that pose all kinds of problems for opposing defenses. At the end of the day, I think Kaepernick will struggle against a tough Carolina D. I pick the Panther defense to have a strong day, and Cam and crew to be able to do just enough to win this one.

San Diego Chargers (+9.5) at Denver Broncos

Denver-Broncos-LogoMy Pick:  Denver Broncos (-9.5)

The Chargers did hand Denver one of its 3 losses in their Week 15 meeting, but I don’t predict a repeat. San Diego has been a good #6 seed story of a team fighting to the wire to get into the playoffs, and they played well in the Wild Card Round. That said, the Denver offense is going to be too much for San Diego this time around. I predict Manning and crew to have a strong day and to cover the 9.5 point spread. It’s a big spread, but I feel like meeting number three between these AFC West rivals won’t be a particularly close one. Denver will win by two scores.
