Fantasy Analysis: Top Rookie Linebackers of 2013

Paul WorrilowWe had the pleasure of meeting a number of new IDP up-and-comers in the 2013 season. There were a number of rookies that were “all the craze” in the offseason that didn’t pan out, others who were exactly who we thought they were, and yet others who were big surprises.

Below is a sortable table displaying the top fantasy linebackers of the rookie class of those players who played at least 50% of their team’s defensive snaps. Some big surprises were undrafted rookie free agents Paul Worrilow and Joplo Bartu. Worrilow in particular came out of nowhere and turned out to be a great fantasy IDP. Linebackers like Alec Ogletree and Kiko Alonso turned out to be more or less what we expected. They both had very impressive rookie seasons.  The jury is still out on Chicago’s Jon Bostic. I really expected him to shine when given the opportunity, but he seemed fairly middle of the road. Part of that was likely due to being part of a defense decimated by injury, so we’ll have to get another look at Bostic in 2014 to form a good opinion.

Rookies not included in the list because their numbers were not particularly significant are Jarvis Jones, Arthur Brown, Sio Moore, Bjoern Werner, and Barkevious Mingo. We’ll need another season under the microscope for them. Manti Te’o had a decent rookie season with the Chargers, but he doesn’t appear in the list because he did not play 50% of the team’s defensive snaps in 2013.

It will be interesting to see these players evolve in 2014.

Table after the jump.
