Offseason IDP Rankings: The Defensive Backs (April 30, 2014)

This article is outdated. Please see the updated 2014 IDP Rankings.
Barry ChurchThe draft is looming, but it’s never too early to look at IDP rankings for the 2014 season. We’ve already looked at Linebacker Rankings, and now it’s time to take a look at the defensive backs. These rankings will be fluid as the offseason progresses, and the current rankings do not reflect incoming rookies. Check back often for updates.

If you’re interested in participating in IDP mock drafts, let me know!

Below you’ll find a quick write-up on the top defensive backs and you can find the full rankings after the jump.

Harrison Smith (MIN, S) – ADPV: 5.163

Smith has been at the top of the defensive back ranks for much of his first two NFL seasons. His season was limited in 2013 after suffering an early injury. Minnesota’s secondary suffered terribly in his absence, but it is much improved while he’s on the field. Smith is an active force when healthy and he’s put up strong numbers during his first two seasons. In 24 games played he’s compiled 161 tackles, 1 sack, 5 interceptions, and 14 passes defensed. Look for him to remain in the top tier of defensive backs in 2014.

Denver S, T.J. Ward

T.J. Ward (DEN, S) – ADPV: 4.843

Ward was the #3 defensive back in terms of fantasy scoring in 2013. After having a somewhat disappointing 2012 season, Ward came on strong in 2013 in his final year in Cleveland. He now finds himself moving into Denver’s already strong run defense, and he stands to have another solid season. He may have been overlooked as an IDP early last year, but was a top producer. He should be among the elite defensive backs in 2014.

Titans S, Bernard Pollard

Bernard Pollard (TEN, S) – ADPV: 6.461

Pollard had a fairly typical and solid season in 2013 for Tennessee, and he’s not re-signed a new contract that will keep him with the Titans. He is a hard hitting safety that is punishing in defending the run game. There aren’t many who can come up and stuff the runner like Pollard. He’s getting up in age, but should have enough in the tank to put up another consistent season in 2014. He’s perennially good for 90+ tackles, 1-3 sacks, 1-3 interceptions, and 5+ passes defensed.

Packers S, Morgan Burnett

Morgan Burnett (GB, S) – ADPV: 6.279

Burnett is another safety who has been a perennial fixture at the top of the defensive back rankings. That said, he had a rough 2013 season. He was limited during the offseason and missed the first month of the season. His numbers were down, and he was clearly struggling. Now having a full offseason to put things back together, Burnett should return to his consistent ways. When healthy he’s good for 70+ tackles, at least 1 interception, and 5+ passes defensed.

Chargers S, Eric Weddle

Eric Weddle (SD, S) – ADPV: 5.362

Weddle has quietly been a top tier IDP option at DB for several years running. In his 7 NFL seasons he has only missed 4 games, and he hasn’t missed a game in the last four years. During that time he’s been a picture of consistency. Since settling in as the starting free safety for San Diego, Weddle is averaging 82 tackles, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, and 8 passes defensed.
