IDP Woes: Cardinals LB Daryl Washington suspended for 2014 season

Cardinals LB, Daryl WashingtonDaryl Washington’s off-field problems have continued again this offseason, and it looks like the worst case scenario is going to unfold for Arizona and fantasy IDP owners. Earlier in the offseason Washington was arrested on assault charges and sentenced to 1 year of probation. Talk show host and Phoenix reporter Mike Jurecki reported on Twitter that the linebacker will be suspended for the entire 2014 season.

The team knew a suspension was going to come down from the NFL, but they probably weren’t expecting one of this magnitude. However, the writing was on the wall for Washington as he likely wasn’t going to get much leniency from the NFL after his 2013 suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. This is a huge blow to the Arizona defense as their linebacking corps will be seriously depleted after losing Karlos Dansby in free agency and now their most dynamic player in Washington.

This shakes up the fantasy football IDP world as Washington was a consensus top 10 fantasy defensive option. His statistical numbers for the games he’s played in the last 2 seasons have been monstrous. Up until this verdict came down Washington was going off the board in the top 10 in the Getting Defensive IDP Mock Drafts. IDP draft strategies across the land will have to be modified now.

UPDATE: It turns out that Washington’s suspension is not related to the legal issues, but is as a result of another violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Not good, Daryl. Not good.
