IDP Injury Woes: Colts LB Robert Mathis out for season with torn achilles

More bad news in the IDP world. Colts star outside linebacker Robert Mathis who is currently serving a four game suspension has torn his achilles while working out in Atlanta away from team facilities. He will miss the entire 2014 season.

This is a huge blow to a Colts defense that relies heavily on a strong pass rush from Mathis. Mathis was the 2013 NFL sack leader, and is a key veteran leader in the team’s locker room. The Colts were hoping to make due with existing personnel during Mathis’ suspension, but now they find themselves in a rough spot for the rest of the season. Certainly, there will be a number of questions brought up about this incident since the injury occurred while he was working out away from team facilities during his suspension.

As for fantasy impact, Mathis was the #15 linebacker of 2013 in terms of fantasy points scored and he has been considered one of the top outside linebacker options for the 2014 season. Erik Walden, Bjoern Werner, Johnathan Newsome, Cam Johnson, and Andy Studebaker are now left to carry the load at OLB. While Werner has some upside and Walden has made a few nice plays, none of the bunch are very good IDP options at this point.
