Special Teams Monday (Week 15)

Each week @mr_wendy will be taking a look back at the week that was in the NFL with a special focus on special teams and relevancy of special teams players in fantasy football. Check back each week.

Games are won and lost with our special teams. Were you knocked out because Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a XP or 2 FG’S (for those of us in leagues that subtract points for misses)? Perhaps you grabbed a victory with a big day from Josh Brown of the Giants or Nick Folk from the Jets? Tavon Austin of the Rams scored a punt return for a TD that I’m sure helped someone.  Don’t ignore the part of the game that can give you those rare points to separate you from your opponent.

Punters DO matter

Johnny Hekker of the St. Louis Rams will be a top paid punter. Johnny gets the largest guaranteed money ever for a punter, 9 million. 18 million will keep him locked up till the 2020 season. Not bad for an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State. If your looking at a punter who can make a difference he is your guy. His arm alone has him standing out. He is 5 of 6 passing with a touchdown and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. What’s not to love?

My top kick returners from Week 14:

  1. Tavon Austin (St. Louis Rams) – His touchdown was impressive. 35.750 Avg Punt Return Yards also was nice. He may have not graded out well as a WR but he sure is making a difference on his returns. I’m sure your not counting on him as a WR but he better be your KR guy.
  2. Bruce Ellington (San Francisco 49ers) – 23.000 Avg Punt Return Yards, 30.667 Avg Kickoff Return Yards  scored you points. It is fantasy gold to have someone who returns both punts and kicks.
  3. Josh Cribbs (Indianapolis Colts) – A big return over 40 yards put him into the top 4. With 28.200 Avg Kickoff Return Yards to boot.
  4. Tedd Ginn, Jr. (Arizona Cardinals) – Big return over 40 yards with a healthy 32 yards return average.

Only 2 kickers deserve to be mentioned this week:

  1. Josh Brown (New York Giants) – 5 of 5  on his kicks with a perfect 3 for 3 on his XP’S
  2. Nick Folk  (New York Jets) – He also hit 5 0f 5 and added 1 XP.

 Top Punters from Week 14:

  1. Ryan Allen (New England Patriots) – 4 punts inside the 20! Thats a big stat. Toss in a net average of 44 yards and you have a good game for a punter.
  2. Brandon Fields (Miami Dolphins) – He managed 3 punts inside the 20 and had the leagues top net average at 45.8. Miami’s defense has fallen off but not their special teams guys.
  3. Andy Lee (San Francisco 49ers) – He had 2 punts inside the 20 but the reason were talking about him this week…63 yard punt!

Good luck to those of you moving on this week in your playoffs.
