Special Teams Monday (Week 16)

Each week @mr_wendy will be taking a look back at the week that was in the NFL with a special focus on special teams and relevancy of special teams players in fantasy football. Check back each week.

Week 15 started off with a defensive (sloppy more so then not) game. In that game of field position the punting game was critical. In the early part of the 3rd quart, Johnny Hekker was pinned deep in his own end zone and BOOMED a punt 57 yards.

How about the returns for touchdowns? Marcus Thigpen gave the Buffalo Bills a BIG swing in that game. Knile Davis from Kansas City showed off his speed on his big return. Those players put up some big points in their return roles. I personally was hurt on the Thigpen return. It gave my opponent a big play and brought him back and put him in position to get an upset win.

My top punters from Week 15:

  1. Drew Butler (Arizona Cardinals)With their offense sputtering without Carson Palmer the punting unit is out much more now. Butler delivered with six punts inside the 20. That performance gave his lucky owners a major advantage in their playoff games. His average was only 36.6 but that’s because of the field position.
  2. Steve Weatherford (New York Giants)Always a solid punter he was back in top scoring shape. 5 punts inside the 20 and an average of 43.3.
  3. Dustin Colquitt (Kansas City Chiefs)He took advantage of his field position and dropped 5 punts inside the 20. Nothing is better then having your opponent starting from inside his own 20. 36.3 average from Colquitt.
  4. Pat McAfee (Indianapolis Colts)Punted 4 inside the 20 yard line with a very healthy average of 45.6.
  5. Johnny Hekker (St. Louis Rams) – He is always on the top of my lists. He is my top punter for dynasty. This young gun booted 3 inside the 20 and averaged 43.8 yards.
  6. Brett Kern (Tennessee Titans)3 punts inside the 20 with an average of 45.3
  7. Andy Lee (San Francisco 49ers)3 punts inside the 20 with an average of 39.6

My top Return Guys of Week 15:

  1. Marcus Thigpen (Buffalo Bills)He had an electrifying kick return with a good return average.
  2. De’Anthony Thomas (Kansas City Chiefs)The touchdown return keeps him on the top performers list again. Plug and play return man.
  3. Leon Washington (Tennessee Titans)He had a big return over 40 yards which helped his team and our fantasy teams. With 116 return yards on 5 returns he did him self good.
  4. Ted Ginn, Jr. (Arizona Cardinals)Big punt return over 40.
  5. Devin Hester (Atlanta Falcons)Big play on a kick return over 40 yards.
  6. Jarvis Landry (Miami Dolphins) – It’s hard using him as a dedicated return guy but in leagues where you get the yardage added to his poition this guy will be gold. Returning both punts, and kick offs with his slot work he is putting up BIG points. 17 yard average on punts and 26 on kick offs.\
  7. Josh Cribbs (Indianapolis Colts)30 yard average.
  8. Frankie Hammond (Kansas City Chiefs)37 yard average.

Knile Davis had a nice return on his only attempt as well, but he’s not someone who is being started in most leagues as a return guy.

Good luck in your championship games! Go for the title and the glory as the rest prepare for the off season.

In addition to the big kick return, Hester had 5 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown for the offense. Solid day for leagues that give him Special Teams and O stats.
