Week 14 Start ‘Em/Sit ‘Em

The fantasy playoffs are here! Congratulations if you successfully navigated a tumultuous season filled with unusual circumstance and injury to make it this far. Each week I’ve taken a look at some players with favorable matchups that are start-worthy and others with not-so-favorable matchups that you should keep on the bench. If you are a daily fantasy player, some of these starts could be great values. Be sure to check back often for updated player rankings, weekly waiver wire targets, and weekly deep sleepers.

Start ‘Em

Tony Romo (QB, Dallas Cowboys) at Chicago Bears

Despite some down games and injury woes, Romo is actually having one of his best seasons in 2014. Things should certainly be looking up in Week 14 as Romo and company will be facing a shoddy Chicago defense. The Bears are giving up the second most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. He’s a good start this week.

Colin Kaepernick (QB, San Francisco 49ers) at Oakland Raiders

Kaep had a rough Week 13, but he should bounce back this week with a much more favorable matchup. He will be facing an Oakland defense that has given up 16+ fantasy points to QBs in three of the last four weeks (20+ and 30+ in two of those). Overall, the Raiders are giving up the 11th most fantasy points in the league and have shown that they can struggle as they just made Shaun Hill of the Rams look like a MVP in Week 13. Kaepernick is a good play this week.

Mark Ingram (RB, New Orleans Saints) vs. Carolina Panthers

Ingram is coming off of a solid week versus Pittsburgh and he seems to be in form to close out the season strong. In Week 14 he and the Saints will be facing a Carolina defense that is giving up an average of 21.5 fantasy points to running backs. Ingram’s last matchup with the Panthers resulted in a very nice outing consisting of 30 carries for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. Carolina should struggle with the offensive attack that the Saints bring this week, and it should be a very good week for Ingram.

Dan Herron (RB, Indianapolis Colts) at Cleveland Browns

Herron was a sleeper the last two weeks, but the secret is out. He’s getting the usage in the Colts’ offense that Ahmad Bradshaw saw before going down with injury. He’ll get the majority of carries and will be the back that’s more involved i the pass game. The fumble tendencies are worrisome, but it shouldn’t affect his snaps. He and the Colts will be facing a very banged up Cleveland defense. While they’ve been middle of the road in terms of fantasy points allowed to RBs, the Browns have given up 373 rushing yards over the last three weeks.

Kelvin Benjamin (WR, Carolina Panthers) at New Orleans Saints

Look for KBenj to continue his nice rookie performance against the Saints in Week 14. It will be a favorable matchup as New Orleans is giving up the fifth most fantasy points to wide receivers this year. His targets will continue to remain high and he should find success. Benjamin is a good start this week.

Marqise Lee (WR, Jacksonville Jaguars) vs. Houston Texans

Circumstance has shined on the rookie Lee and he’s stepped up in recent weeks. With Allen Robinson being lost to injury Lee has stepped up and has seen 13 targets over the last two weeks and has put up nearly 19 fantasy points during that time. Look for his opportunities and production to increase as the end of the season plays out. In Week 14 he and the Jags will be facing a Houston defense that is giving up the most fantasy points to wide receivers this season.

Jason Witten (TE, Dallas Cowboys) at Chicago Bears

Witten’s production has been up and down in 2014, but he can look forward to great opportunities in a nice matchup for Week 14. He and the Cowboys will be a facing a Chicago defense that is giving up the most fantasy points to opposing tight ends.

St. Louis Rams D/ST at Washington Redskins

If you’re looking for a nice matchup-based D/ST play in Week 14, the Rams could be a nice pick. They’ll be facing a struggling Redkins offense that has allowed opposing defenses to score an average of 13.3 fantasy points against them this season. That’s second worst in the league.

Sit ‘Em

Mark Sanchez (QB, Philadelphia Eagles) vs. Seattle Seahawks

I realize Sanchez has been playing very well for the Eagles since coming in for Foles. He’s thrown for nice yardage and 8 touchdowns in the last five weeks and all the while the Eagles offense has looked much better with him under center. All of that said, don’t touch Sanchez in Week 14. He and the Eagles will be facing the stingy Seattle defense that is giving up the fewest fantasy points to QBs this season. Playoff time. Horrible matchup. Don’t take the risk.

C.J. Anderson (RB, Denver Broncos) vs. Buffalo Bills

The Broncos’ offense has looked even more frightening in recent weeks as a running game has emerged with C.J. Anderson, but don’t get ahead of yourself this Week as Denver faces Buffalo. The matchup isn’t so favorable. The Bills have given up the third fewest fantasy points to running backs this season. Anderson is a good play under normal circumstances, but this week is probably a good one to avoid him.

Mike Evans (WR, Tampa Bay Bucs) at Detroit Lions

The rookie has come on in the second half of the season and has produced very well. However, Week 14 poses a bad matchup against the Lions. Detroit is giving up the third fewest fantasy points to wide receivers. The matchup is bad for both Evans and VJax this week. With playoffs at hand, it’s a risk to avoid if you can.

Greg Olsen (TE, Carolina Panthers) at New Orleans Saints

If there’s one thing the Saints defense has been consistently solid at in 2014, it’s been limiting production by tight ends. Olsen and the Panthers are facing an unfavorable matchup against a New Orleans defense that is giving up the fewest fantasy points in the league to tight ends this season.

Cleveland Browns D/ST vs. Indianapolis Colts

The Browns’ defense has had some nice weeks this season, but injury has been seriously limiting them of late. In Week 14 they face the Colts who are the top scoring offense in the league. Look for Cleveland to struggle this week on defense.
