Punch Drunk Wonderland

Player Profile: Curtis Brinkley (RB, Chargers)

UPDATE (12/21/12): It’s looking like Brinkley is going to be too much of a risk in Week 16 with Ronnie Brown a full participant in Friday’s practice. Brown will likely get the start and the majority of carries. Brinkley could produce, but he’s too much of a risk in fantasy championship week.

Ryan Mathews went down with his second broken collarbone of the season. That means the running back situation in San Diego is opened up. Their stable includes Curtis Brinkley, Jackie Battle, and Ronnie Brown. After Mathews went down last week Brinkley was the most productive of the group. He tallied 6 carries for 42 yards and 3 catches for 14 yards. Based on production, it seems like he should get the nod in Week 16.

One thing to keep an eye on going into Week 16 will be Ronnie Brown’s health situation. He has been sidelined and slowed with an ailing hamstring, and it is likely to keep him grounded another week. However, if Brown does return that could eat into potential touches for Brinkley.

The Chargers will be facing the Jets and their 23rd ranked defense against running backs. NYJ is giving up an average of 17.3 points to opposing RBs. The matchup is ideal, so keep an eye on the running back status in San Diego. Brinkley could be a break out fill in for fantasy championships if you’re needing someone to fill in.
